Beautiful language, lovely story but nothing in this book is really memorable.
I still need to read the memoirs of the geisha on whom this book was (roughly) based. According to her (and other reviewers) Arthur Golden royally screwed over the woman on who Memoirs is based. He apparently twisted facts and drew a fetishised, erotic, male-gaze picture of the life of a Geisha. Therefore, the autobiographical Geisha, a Life is the one to read. After I've read this actual memoir by Mineko Iwasak, I will write a larger review of Memoirs of a Geisha. For now read Madeline's great review about these two books on Goodreads.
